Makivnyk – Sourdough Poppy Seed Crescent (маківник)

Back to baking things that are “Ukrainian-inspired” although this could also be Polish, Hungarian, Slovak, Czech, or from the Baltics (did I cover everything?!?) …. this is Makivnyk (маківник): a sweet, poppy seed filled sweet bread, with a dough similar to a cinnamon roll, although not nearly as sweet and cinnamony. It’s often baked as a breakfast bread or something for afternoon tea, and often during celebratory seasons like Christmas or Easter. I’ve sprinkled it with raw sugar, but you can also add coarse pearl sugar or confectioners sugar. I love it because it isn’t overly sweet. The original recipe that I found was yeast-based but I converted to sourdough.

Irish Cheddar Shortbread Crackers

Switching gears for a minute, it’s almost St. Patrick’s Day and I actually meant to make these last year, but something — I don’t even know what to be honest — got in the way, so I remembered to make them this year. They are really yummy. Irish cheddar was on sale at Whole Foods this week and it’s nicely aged and sharp. The crackers have a high butter and cheese ratio, so definitely flavorful crackers. Would go nicely with a pint for sure! The sesame and poppy seeds are optional, but they give the crackers a bit more character.

Maine Blueberry Cutie Pies

I decided to make a little mini-Valentine’s Day tart — just a little blueberry number. Mostly because aI recently bought this little “cutie pie” pie dish and wanted to show it off. OK, that might be a little bit of a silly reason to bake a pie, but it was delicious to too, so win win.

Plum Pear and Cranberry Chutney

It’s beginning to look a lot like Thanksgiving! Long time followers will know that I often make a few things ahead of the big foodie holiday. I also typically try a riff on your standard cranberry sauce. This year,I found some fantastic italian plums at their peek so I frozen them to add to this Plum Pear and Cranberry Chutney. It’s delicious, and while it doesn’t take very long to make, it’s nice to have it ticked off the list. Should stay good in the ridge until Christmas, if you don’t eat it all at Thanksgiving.
