It’s been a while since I posted one of my breads, but I was talking with my sister about the versatility of sourdough h the other day, so here is a good example: Sourdough Cinnamon Swirl Toasting Bread. Really flavorful, light and airy and a perfect autumn breakfast treat. Delicious!

I went apple picking yesterday and of course that means it is the season for Apple Cider Donuts, so I was inspired to make a slightly healthier version of said doughnut in muffin form (so baked not fried). They do have that special cider donut taste though, so overall a big success. Warning though, if you make this recipe, if feeds a crowd — it’s enough batter for 18 standard sized muffins, so come hungry or be able to pass them out to friends and neighbors.
It’s wild Maine blueberry season so I decided to whip up this coffee cake, verbatim from the King Arthur recipe. Very much like blueberry muffins (very similar recipe in fact), but just in cake form. Stick with the wild sort of blueberry, not the cultivated type, as they are smaller and distribute better throughout the batter.
I decided to make this little Almond Red Currant Bundt Cake as a thank you present for a friend. I don’t make many things gluten free, but do know that my friend is wheat intolerant, so I gave it a go. Now, bundt cakes don’t need a whole lot of structure (that gluten provides) and I did give it some extra lift by whipping the egg whites separately (in addition to baking powder). Recipe is for one big bundt cake or two little ones (which I did). Substitute fresh or frozen blueberries if you don’t have red currant.
When I think of purple foods, the first thing that comes to mind are blueberries. There are, of course, other purple foods — plums, potatoes, cabbage even artichokes, eggplant and asparagus — but the easiest for me is blueberries as I have a whole bunch frozen in my fridge plus the jar of jam that I made last year. The color came out very dark but the glaze was perfectly blueberry-esque.
